Obscura, for me, is a video art that embodies the complexity of an anxious, stressed mind. The original video of the crows that I used in this work comes from a time when I brought my cat to the roof so she could play in the fresh air, as it is very unlikely in Iran to let your cat go outside freely.
On that day, many crows gathered above where my cat and I were standing and started flying in a circle centered around us. I was scared about their intentions and for my cat’s safety. It felt as if they wanted to steal the little cat, who is like my child. It was a very strange moment, full of fear and uncertainty.
Later, I used this video in the artwork. For me, it represents a busy, occupied mind filled with many thoughts and unexpected problems that may arise. This was also the same time when I was applying to study abroad, and every day something unexpected would increase my stress, such as the devaluation of our currency, the possibility of the embassy closing, and other uncertainties.
