Taboo
Mixed Media on Cardboard, 2019
Each country has its own unique historical fluctuations, and Iran is no exception. In the post-World War II era, Iran has undergone significant cultural changes. However, there are still considerable cultural differences between Iran and Western countries. For instance, topics related to sexuality are often considered taboo, and there is a lack of sex education in schools and universities.
While being sexually active is becoming more accepted among young people, only a small number of individuals are fully aware of the precautions they should take before, during, and after engaging in sexual activities. Consequently, there is a high number of unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Discussing sex should not be treated as taboo, and this calls for meaningful changes in both cultural attitudes and laws.
These mixed media pieces are painted with shoe polish on paper and then placed on cardboard. I have also used charcoal and pastel.
